Discovering New Music

It’s always a joyous occasion when you discover new music.  Though, I have found that the older I get, the more I tend to listen to the tried and true staples of my long time musical diet.  How can you go wrong with the likes of Pink Floyd, U2, ELO, the Beatles, Kansas…  and so on?

Recently I have found myself in the mood for some heavier music.  I am generally not a fan of screamo vocals and absolutely not a fan of cookie monster vocals.  So that narrows the playing field quite a bit for me.  So my good friend Rob Steel (creator of this very site) and I were talking about some bands in the Christian market that I may like.  Many of you may not know this but I worked at the HQ of a chain of Christian book/music stores fo five years way back when.  Unfortunately, I have not kept up with the modern bands.  I remember bands like Stryper, Bride, Bloodgood, etc.  But I like the more progressive stuff like Dream Theater or Fates Warning.

Rob told me to check out a number of bands that I’ve never heard of.  Most of them didn’t do anything for me.  He is a huge fan of the band Disciple, so I checked out their album “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades“.  I didn’t like it.  Well they just released a new album so Rob bought me a downloadable copy.  The album is called “O God Save Us All“.  It’s actually a very good record.  I’ve listened quite a few times on the headphones and I’m enjoying it.

He also suggested that I check out Theocracy.  So I bought their last two records via iTunes.  I like this band a lot!  They don’t quite have the hooks that Dream Theater has, but their sound is great when you are on the eliptical!

Finally, I met up with some friends of mine for lunch last week.  They are both very into Goth.  They are a married couple that just celebrated their five year anniversary.  So for this celebration they went to London to see several goth bands.  They got to see one of my all time favorites, Fields of the Nephilim.  The awesome thing is that they bought me a tour t-shirt from the show!!  While they were in London they also saw a band called O.Children.  They were amazed by this band, so they told me to check them out.  So I have and I am a fan now too.  If you like goth stuff, you owe it to yourself to check them out!
